Eye Vision Limit for IPS?

Postby Prabhu » May 10th, 2009, 8:04 pm

Sir,

I'm an IPS Aspirant. I will be writing my prelims in 2010.

I want to know whether performance of LASIK surgery to correct eye vision will disqualify a candidate for IPS.
What are the rules regarding it? For example, in Army, LASIK should have been performed six months before appearance for physical test.
My eye power is too high. Its above -5 in both eyes.

When will they conduct the physical eligibility tests?
Between interview and results declaration or after results declaration?

thanks,
prabhu

DEAR PRABHU,

IN THE CIVIL SERVICES, IPS IS CONSIDERED A TECHNICAL SERVICE, AND
EYE VISION REQUIREMENT ARE TO BE MET. THE CANDIDATE WILL BE REFERRED TO A MEDICAL
BOARD FOR MEDICAL EXAMINATION.

THE TOTAL AMOUT OF MYOPIA SHALL NOT EXCEED MINUS 4, (INCLUDIING CYLINDER)
AND HYPER METROPIA (INCLUDING THE CYLINDER) SHALL NOT EXCCED PLUS 4.
HIGHER GRADE COLOUR VISION IS ESSENTIAL FOR IPS.

NOTHING IS MENTIONED ABOUT LASIK IN THE OFFICIAL GAZZETE.
I WOULD ADVISE YOU TO SHOW THE GAZZETE OF INDIIA NOTIFICATION TO A DOCTOR,
AND GET YOUR DOUBT CLARIFIED.

ALSO BE INFORMED THAT THESE STRICT CONDITIONS OF VISION ARE NOT
APPLICABLE TO IAS OR IFS.

IF YOU ARE IN CHENNAI. YOU MAY COLLECT A COPY OF THE GAZZETE FROM ME.

MY OFFICE,

17, BOAT CLUB ROAD,
R A PURAM,
CHENNAI-28

DEAR PRABHU,

HOPE YOU HAVE GONE THROUGH THE GAZZETE THAT YOU PICKED UP
FORM MY OFFICE. VISION SHOULD NOT BE AN ISSUE TO YOU. IN ANY CASE
THERE IS AN IAS. SO, WHY BOTHER ABOUT IT?
GO AHEAD WITH THE PREPARATION.
BEST WISHES,

Sir,

I consulted few doctors and IPS Probationers after studying the Gazette copy you gave me. I later emailed my
queries to your hotmail id. I can understand a cop's inbox will always be full. :)

As mine is a non-pathological case of Myopia, I am eligible for IPS. My power is -6. Candidates with powers
of -14 and -7 have been selected in last few years. LASIK before selection is not allowed.

I have some doubts which can be solved by a person with diverse experience in the field.
I feel you are the right person for that.

Is it comfortable to wear contact lens on duty and while engaging in combat/firing?

Can IPS Probationers or Officers perform LASIK eye surgery to correct vision, after joining the service?
Do you know anyone who has done like that?

thanks,
prabhu

DEAR PRABHU,

I DON T KNOW ANYONE WHO DONE LASIK SURGERY. EVEN IF THEY DID THEY WONT TELL.
BUT I AM SURE THAT WEARING GLASSES IS NOT A DISQUALIFICATION, FOR MANY
DO WEAR GLASSES. IT IS NOT A HINDRANCE TO THE PERFORMANCE OF DUTIES.

IF YOU ARE KEEN , NOTHING CAN STOP YOU FROM PERFORMING YOUR DUTIES.
