Dear Mr. Dharmendra,
There are 2 ways of getting at DSP/ASP level post-
First is through IPS, then the post is of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).
Second is through PPS (Provincial Police Service) through State Civil Service exam. The Officers who are selected through State Civil Service Exam or promoted as PPS, from Inspector rank, get the Rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).
Many districts are now being upgraded or have already been upgraded to Commissionerate level.
So, the ranks in those districts are:
ACP = ASP or DSP
ADCP = SP
DCP = SP
Addl. CP= SSP
Commissioner of Police= SSP or above
That is according to the hierarchy. Commissioner and DCP are the heads and the district is divided into various zones headed by ADCPs and ACPs.
For better clarification, you can visit Ludhiana Police Commissionerate website
http://ludhianapolice.in/Static/organization.aspx for the organization chart.
Here, instead of referring as DSP or ASP, we use ACP only.
Some areas have SDOP rank- Sub Divisional Officer of Police. It is equivalent to ASP rank. Mr. Narinder Kumar, the martyr IPS Officer was posted as SDOP.
One important difference lies that A.S.P., being IPS Officer, have time bound promotion, and are promoted much earlier to Addl. S.P. and S.P., in about 2 years or so, whereas, for DSPs, it takes much more time.
I would request Sir to kindly enlighten us more, if there is a need. Please feel free to share all your doubts with members of forum.
Regards,
